We Can Change the World :: Personal Narrative Writing

We Can Change the World Ive been in many neighborhoods that were ugly and messy until one time in 1992 when we moved to Florence and Central. When I first saw this area, I entangle scared and disturbing. I peculiarly hate the black gate that made our street seem like a prison. The worst things were the bad neighborhoods, drugs, violence, and homeless people. On the first day, I could look the aroma of old garbage mixed with beer and spoiled food. Just one smell of that disgusting dump made me vomit until I had nothing leave to exit. All the streets were dumped with pieces of garbage such as used diapers, used sanitary napkins, and unfounded rats. The streets were cleaned every day, but at the end of the day they were dirty again. iodin day while walking down the street, I found a drained dog that was thrown away like trash. I felt sad since that animal once had life and was probably killed for the fun of it. My new block was a disaster and I never saw any people around. The precisely people alive there were retired people. The retired peoples houses were fortified with metal bars and high tech alarms. They wouldnt come out of their houses. They would just peek through their windows. It made me tied(p) more scared. I turned to my father, who had the bright idea to move here, and I requireged him Dad, divert dont move here. He turned around and said, Honey we will represent sunshine to this place. After the third week of living there, I just hated the place. I saw two gangsters injecting drugs and sniffing a white substance. The next day, I saw about twenty used needles thrown in the alley. Then I turned around and saw two gangsters in back of me with bikes. They followed me, and I walked as fast as I could. My legs seemed like they were two old turtles. My pith was bumping like a D.J., and the blood was racing in my body. I felt like dying right on the spot. While I was in a rush, I saw a police car passing and the gangsters disappeared. I never saw them again. I also witnessed a young mother forcing her children to beg for money, so she could buy drugs. She injected herself while her children were crying for her.We Can Change the World Personal Narrative WritingWe Can Change the World Ive been in many neighborhoods that were ugly and messy until one time in 1992 when we moved to Florence and Central. Gothic Theme in Chapter 5 of Frankenstein Essay -- Mary Shelley

Gothic Horror has been described as delightful nuisance.Focusing on Chapter 5 of Frankenstein, how has Shelley used theGothic Genre to explore deeper issues? The term Gothic conjures a range of possible meanings, definitions and associations. It explicitly denotes certain historic and cultural phenomena. Gothicism was part of the Romantic Movement that started in the eighteenth one C and lasted about three decades into the nineteenth century. For this essay, the definition of Gothic that is applicable is An 18th century literary style characterized by gloom and the supernatural. In the Gothic novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, a wide range of issues are explored. Frankenstein represents an entirely tender vision of the female Gothic, along with many other traditional themes such as religion, science, colonialism and myth.Mary Shelley, the author of the novel Frankenstein, was born on August thirtieth 1797. He father, William Godwin, was a philosopher, and her mother was Mary Woll stonecraft, who is still well known for being an author and one of the first feminists. But unfortunately Mary Shelleys mother died of puerperal fever ten days after giving birth to her daughter. As Marys father was a philosopher, Mary had to perceive to many intellectual talks. Mary was strongly impressed by the brilliant talks she listened to since she was young as she was surrounded by famous writers and philosophers. The intellectual surroundings in which she lived stimulated her Romantic sensibility and the political revolutionary ideas of the time. Later on in life Mary married a man named Percy Bysshe Shelley. Percy was a poet and a member of the Romantic Movement. But unfortunately Mary had to elope with Shelley at the age of 16 as he was... ...t agitation, listening attentively, catching and fearing distributively sound as if it were to announce the approach of the demonical corpse which I had so miserably given life. The archaic vocabulary such as demonical and I took refuge are not words or phrases that we would particularly use today but here it shows Victors own scientific and religious readings are perhaps too dated and too passionate. To conclude, I believe that this novel gives a warning to the reader. I believe that it is telling us not to come to the boundaries of reality and not to tamper with things that would perhaps be better left alone, because the consequences are unknown, unpredictable and unnatural. It tells us that death and birth are things that in the advanced(a) world we just have to accept, and that we should not even attempt to exceed mortal limitations Playing God should be left to God.

The Case Against the Death Penalty Essay example -- capital punishment

In the United States, since the 1970s there have been more than 1270 executions according to the death penalty information center (Fact Sheet), Whats dreadful about that number, is the number of people who were condemned to be executed based on race, income and social status alone, targeting those that could not afford good legal counsel, and were appointed attorneys that were unskilled and had below appropriate professional standards (Hessick 1069), which sealed the fate of those literally fighting for their lives, on the day of sentencing. Capital punishment is unconstitutional, and violates human rights a point of captivate rarely seen when debating the topic. Everyone talks about deterrence, everyone talks about justice for the victim, but no one seems to remember that even though the person responsible for a crime, whatever the nature of this crime is, is still a human being with constitutional, and human rights just like all of us. This paper volition present facts that will help the reader understand the real nature of capital punishment, presenting the case against the death penalty for reasons of unconstitutionality and human rights violations. The first thing I want to overcompensate is deterrence. Does the death penalty really deter crime? Some people say it does, that they work the same way speed signs work First you visor the speed sign, then you drive without getting over the speed limit, it obviously works. Or does it? I came across many articles proving that speed signs are not a deterrent for speeding. Imaginary Journey in Dantes Divine Comedy :: Divine Comedy Inferno Essays

Imaginary Journey in Dantes betoken Comedy Dantes Divine Comedy is a moral comedy that is designed to make the readers think about their own morals.  The poem could have been used almost as a guide for what and what non to do to get into Heaven for the medieval people.  Dante takes the reader on a journey through the afterlife to imprint in the readers minds what could surpass to them if they dont follow a Godlike life and to really make the reader think about where they will go when they die and where they would like to go when they die.  In the Divine Comedy, Dante uses his imagination and his knowledge of the peoples intuition of the afterlife to create a somewhat realistic yet somewhat imaginary model of the afterlife.        In the starting signal lines of the Divine Comedy, Dante says In the middle of the journey of our life I came to my senses in a dark forest, for I had lost the straight path.(Dante 1416 lines 1-3)  This is th e typical stereotype of today for when a person becomes lost or consumed in sin.  The sinful life is a dark life and a sinless life is a bright, white, and double-dyed(a) life.  Dantes coming to his senses in a dark forest symbolizes his realizing how lost in sin he truly was and realizing that he needed to do something about it, moment he needed to go through the seven sacraments so that he could become pure enough to see God in Paradise and not have to spend and eternity in Hell.  Dante realized that he had strayed from the true faith without realizing it, not knowing exactly how it happened, and is trying to return.  Losing the straight path symbolizes losing the holy, pure, or Godlike life. Darkness is more or less a symbol of evil and light or brightness a symbol for good. Throughout the poem, Dante is advocating that humanity must consciously aim for righteousness and morality.  People can often become so involved with day-to-day living that they will fall into a life consumed with sin.  Man must always be aware of his need to perform righteously.  The dark forest symbolizes a human life where every wakeful moment is not consciously devoted to morals and righteousness.        The Inferno is probably the most realistic section of the Divine Comedy because it comes closer to fitting the peoples perception of what Hell is really like then than Purgatory and Paradise do.

British Girls and Women of the 90s †the Spice Girls, Girl Bands and Their Influence on British Culture

British Girls and Women of the 90s The Spice Girls, Girl Bands and their Influence on British ending The twentieth century will, without doubt, be viewed by historians as the Womans Hour. The status of women in Britain changed. More and more women started to leave their homes and join the labour market. They started to conflict for their independence and political, economic and social rights. Women got more recognition from the society and they started to pursue equality with men. They progressed from being (almost) possessions of men, with no legal status of their own, to being considered legal citizens in their own right. As far as the political background is concerned, it is worth saying a few words about Margaret Thatcher. Following the defeat of the Conservatives in 1974 election, Margaret Hilda Thatcher was elected as the new leader. She wentaon to lead the Conservatives toathe victory in the election of 1979 andathe party remained in power until 1997. Christopher states that, She was developing economicaideas which were guided by the fashionable theories of monetarism(Christopher, 12).These multiform reducing inflation with high interest rates and submitting all aspects of the economy to free-market theories and the laws of supply and demand. Her economic and political ideas, which came to be known as Thatcherism began to be to the full expressed and implemented. But in Britain, there were high rates of unemployment during the periods of the 1980s and early 90s. The jobs people lost were mostly skilled jobs in manufacturing industry, which were regarded as mens room jobs. Massive cuts in state spending led to job losses in the public houselic sector, which affected women equally.According to Christophers study Because these jobs were usually semi-skilled or weak and low paid, the women were more interchangeable as employees and could find part-time office work or cleaning work, similarly low paid, elsewhere. (Christopher, 13) Women wereabeginning to occupy postsain traditional male-dominatedaareas much(prenominal) as business, alaw and banks. aMany of them couldaenjoy the benefitsaof increasing financialaand sexual freedom, aand were postponing marriageaand children. Many various feminist groups appeared and the third-wave of feminism in the USA began. The Spice Girls wereaa Britisha papa girlagroup formedain 1994 and the biggest popular cultural icons of the 1990s. As McGibbon mentions, performing pop music, Spice Girls achieved a worldwide success, selling over 55 one thousand million albums all over the world, the most from among all female singing groups in the tw entieth century. (McGibbon, 23). Wherever they appeared, they could count on the support of the army of fans from all over the world, as well as the hysterical chemical reaction of the media. The pop phenomenon the Spice Girlsachanged the courseaof popularamusic andapopular culture. Both albums and eight of their singles releases achieved number one chart position in the UK. In June 1997 the Girls undertook to make a feature-length film called Spiceworld The Movie. The film was directed by Bob Spiers (director of Absolutely Fabulous, Fawlty Towers, and Are You Being Served? ) and was a comical narrative from the Spice Girls real life adventures. According to some, the film was a runway success, becoming the second highest-grossing British film of 1997 (after Bean). (McGibbon, 45). Theayear 1997 sawathe Spice Girls capitalisingaon their fame throughaa multimillion dollaraphenomenon ofamerchandise, with hundredsaof formalized products. They may have made a great pop music, but if ever a group regarded their creative endeavours as a means to achieving a commercial end it was the Spice Girls. While pop stars through the decades have generally tried to a greater or lesser extent to entertain their artistic integrity by not appearing to endorse unrelated or unsuit able products, the Spice Girls did the exact opposite. They were up for anything. According to Sinclair, When it came to endorsements, it seemed that Spice Girls didnt know the meaning of the word No. (Sinclair, 50) There was apparently no product of consumer interest, however mundane or embarrassing, that it was beyond their ingenuity to adapt to the girl power credo. By the middleaof 1997, theaSpice Girlsahad signed up for product tie-in deals with Pepsi, Benetton, Feberge, Sony PlayStations, Polaroid cameras and Walkers crisps. By the September 1997, the group were estimated to have earned $47 million by Forbes magazine, which ranked them at number 32 in their list of highest paid entertainers. (http//www. sociology. org. uk/fchan1. pdf). This was a staggering achievement considering how little time they had been operating in the marketplace. All these achievements of the Spice Girls corroborate a huge potential of the band. Theaarrival of the Spice Girlsaadded to the new imageaan d re-branding of Britain, aand underlined the growing worldapopularity of British, ratherathan U.S. , pop music. aThis fact was visible at the BRIT Awards ordinance in 1997. aThe group won twoaawards but itawas Halliwells Union Jack mini-dress which she designed herself thataappeared in media coverageaall over the worldaand eventually became a symbol of Cool Britannia. They were the first pop phenomenon truly to understand the demands of the modern multi-media age, and to tailor their efforts accordingly. To their credit, the Spice Girls had an immensely powerful influence on children and teenagers. The girls were crazy about them. The kids of a generation whose musical horizons had previously been restricted to Mr Blobby, a character from a television show Noels House Party, and Sesame Street singalongs, became sensitised to pop music thanks to the Spice Girls. Teenagers modelled on the girls dyeing hair red, performing dances and dressing up as their favourite Spice Girls. There w ere many all-girl bands which appeared during the existence of the Spice Girls such as Attomic Kitten, Sugababes or Girls Aloud and many of which were created after the collapse of the group. All or most of them modelled themselves on those five wonderful girls.Despite the fact that there were, and still there are, many girl bands, none of them also the aforementioned ones has left such a big impression on pop music as the Spice Girls. As Sinclair states, They became, almost overnight, a fondly regard and instantly recognisable part of British pops royal family. (Sinclair, 89). In summaries of their achievements ranging from the most informed biographies to the most aimless of pub conversations it was a generally held and often stated belief that, the group put British music back on the world stage and ushered in a global renaissance in pop. Besides hat, Carmine also assured that Charlie would meet all his agency requirements. So, Charlie was induced and signed the contract. * No in consistency There must be no inconsistency between the collateral contract and the term of the main contract Hoyts v Spencer (1919) 27 CLR 133. This is an area difficultly for Charlie because the written contract does not record the oral promissory made by Carmine. Charlie asked Carmine that is the software suitable for his company use and Carmine has assured Charlie that it is suitable for his company but this is not written in the contract.Charlie has signed the contract without noticing that parol was not recorded in the written contract. If he sign the contract that means he has confirm the contract. Charlie would succeed in an action for misrepresentation. Carmine has made a statement of fact about the package of software (this package is widely used by several of well-established real agencies in South Australia wand was more than adequate for a small agency) that is false and which has induced Charlie to signed and entered the contract. As a result of Carmine misrepresentatio n Charlie has suffered personnel casualty and damage of his company. It is double-faced misrepresentation because Carmine knew that the package of software had already obsolete and had lie to make the sale. Charlie can rescind the contract and claim loss in the tort of deceit Derry v Peek- Graw 12. 7. 2). Charlie can rescind the contract for unconscionable conduct. Carmine has destroyed the inequality in bargaining power that exists between him and Charlie. He is in much stronger position as a software dealer compared to Charlie who is in the weaker position as he just has basic knowledge of the software CBA v Amadio (1983) 151 CLR 447.Conclusion * The parol evidence rule support Carmine contention that the contract between Charlie and Carmine contains all the terms of the agreement. * Charlie would argue that the contract is part written and partly oral contract, so that is an incomplete contract. * Charlie can seek rescission of the contract and claim Carmine that his damages in tort of fraudulent misrepresentation. * Charlie can rescind the contract between him and Carmine. The idea of following a film star always appeals to the masses. (Khan, 2013) All fashion labels are about looking good, Being Human is also about doing good. (Beig, 2013) Wearing Being Human means you look good, do good because you help people by the simple act of slipping on your clothes every day. (Mandhana, 2013) The Being Human line is designed to offer comfort, quality and style opus supporting an endeavour of good cause. (Chase, 2009) In a study of how a clothing brands affiliation with a social cause would meet buyers spending habits the research team conducted a survey of Generation Y college students to find out how their support of an existing line of apparel, 7 For All Mankind, might change should the brand begin campaigning with, dictate, Breast Cancer Awareness. The study reported that both college men and women would hold such brands to a higher esteem in general, and 89% would likely switch from Brand A to Brand B if Brand B was associated with a socially/environmentally focused cause (assuming price and quality are held constant). Additionally, 72. 4% stated they had intentionally bribed a brand name product due to the fact that the brand was affiliated with a cause they agreed with. 4 (Markson, 2012) Purpose is being integrated into marketing efforts in more concerted ways and with favourable consumer response. fit to Markson, the marketing world is coming to an understanding that purpose must carry as much weight in crafting an effective ad campaign as the traditional Four Ps of Marketing Price, Placement, Product and Promotion. In the United States, after quality and price, social purpose (at 47 per centum) ranks higher as a purchase motivator than brand loyalty (27 percent) and design and innovation (26 percent). In addition, if a brand of similar quali ty supports a good cause, 75 percent of consumers claim they would buy it and 76 percent claim they would recommend and part positive experiences about such a brand.Sixty-two percent of U. S. consumers say they would also switch brands if a brand of similar quality supported a good cause. Finally, U. S. consumers departingness to actually promote a brand that supports a good cause jumped 19 percent from 2008 (47 percent) to 2010 (66 percent). (Barkley Cause Survey, 2010) A full 88 percent of American men say it is important for a brand to support a cause. Such a finding points to a new masculine ideal fetching hold, an evolution beyond the bad-boy tough guy ideal. American men are comfortable with having a good heart.Maybe they dont want to wear it on their sleeve. But they do want to contribute done their purchases, and in fact a majority demands it, 55 percent of men s supporter they would switch brands from a company that did not support a cause to one that did. (Storm, 2013) Fashion is fun, but roundtimes its more than that. Certain brands answer to a higher calling than simply making shoppers look fab and consumers seem willing to pay extra for it. According to Nielsens Global Corporate Citizenship Survey, 46 percent ofconsumers are willing to pay more for products and serve from companies that give rearward to society. (Nielsen, 2012) New findings from a Nielsen survey of more than 28,000 online respondents from 56 countries around the world provide fresh in atomic reactors to help businesses better understand the right audience for cause marketers, which architectural planmes resonate most strongly with this audience, and what marketing methods may be most effective in leaveing these consumers. In the study, respondents were asked if they prefer to buy products and services from companies that implement computer programmes that give stake to society.Anticipating a positive response bias, respondents were also asked whether they would be wil ling to pay extra for those services. For the purposes of this study, Nielsen defines the socially conscious consumer as those who say they would be willing to pay the extra. Two thirds (66%) of consumers around the world say they prefer to buy products and services from companies that have implemented programs to give back to society. That preference extends to other matters, too they prefer to work for these companies (62%), and invest in these companies (59%).A smaller share, but still nearly half (46%) say they are willing to pay extra for products and services from these companies. These are the socially conscious consumers, as defined by and focused upon in this report. Sixty three percent of global, socially-conscious consumers are under get along with 40, they consult social media when making purchase decisions and are most concerned about environmental, educational and hunger causes, according to a new study from Nielsen, a leading global provider of information and insigh ts into what consumers watch and buy. 5 6 Few of the brands I came across during my research2. 1 Sseko Designs Mission and Impact on Sseko Designs official webpage Sseko Designs uses fashion to provide habit and scholarship opportunities to women pursuing their dreams and everyplacecoming p overty. To date, theyve enabled 33 to continue on to University. They provide employ (along with entrance to a comprehensive social impact program) to their team of 45 women in Uganda. And they do it all finished a financially selfsustaining copy. Issue 1 effeminate students, due to a lack of economic opportunity, are not able to continue on to university and pursue leadership positions in society. resoluteness 1 Sseko Designs provides employment during the 9 month gap between high school and university where high potential young women are able to earn and save enough money to pay for college tuition. 50% of their salary each month goes into a savings account that is not irritateible until tuition is due. This ensures that their income goes towards education. This also protects the women in the program from the social pressure they often feel from their families to give away the money they are earning which can perpetuate the cycle of meagreness. At the end of each term, Sseko Designs grants university scholarships that match up to 100% of the savings each woman has made during her 9 month session with Sseko. Issue 2 In a patriarchal and male rule society, women are not afforded the same employment and economic opportunities as their male counterparts. Although 66% of the worlds labour is done by women, they own less than 1% of the worlds assets. As long as women are not afforded educational and professional equality, extreme poverty will continue to exist. Solution 2 For every dollar a women in a break ining economy earn, she will reinvest 90% of it into her family.Empower a woman and you empower an stainless community. In addition to providing employment to wome n working their way towards university, Sseko followers with women from all walks of life. Sseko employs university graduates who comprise the upper level management team. These are women that use their education, experience and voice to help shape their company. Sseko also works to provide employment for women who have aged out of the education system and have no other form of income generation. They partner with a local non-profit in Uganda that works with young women who have recently come out of the commercial sex industry.Providing stable, dignifying and bewitching wage employment is a key component to keeping women from entering back into prostitution. They believe that every woman has the capacity to end the cycle of poverty and that it can be done in a way that is fair, dignifying, honouring and life-giving. Issue 3 Although charities and non-profits play a vital and necessary role in all societies, sometimes charity and aid can play a negative role by enabling dependencie s and damaging the local economies. Like any of us, our African friends need and craving opportunity, dignity, job creation and empowerment.Solution 3 Instead of treating the symptoms, they aim to address the deeper, underlying issues of extreme poverty. Although Sseko Designs has been built for the purpose of impacting a 7 specific social sector, they have chosen very intentionally to use a sustainable, self-sufficient business model to do this. Their take to is to help create industry and fair-trade with the whimsy that a large component of economic development lies in the business sector. They believe in the power of responsible consumerism. Instead of competing for limited donor dollars, they hope consumers will think about the story behind their stuff. If they considered the impact that each product they consume has on the lives of those who produced that product and chose to see consumerism as a overstretch and opportunity for positive social change, they believe the world would be filled with beautiful products with even more beautiful stories. 2. 2 innovation robes lineage Everyone loves the smell of a clean island of Jersey. It ranks among air, food, water supply system, and shelter.Clothing provides protection from the elements, reducing the effects of sun exposure, end up rash, and frostbite. It also provides defence against diseases, many of which are spread through mosquitoes and other insect bites. Proper clothing contributes to cleanliness, comfort, ease of movement and overall health. The simple act of changi ng and washing clothes can prevent infection, chafing, skin disorders and the spreading of viruses. However, in cases of extreme poverty, clothing is often one of the first needs to be ignored. Statistically, more than one gazillion people in the world live on less than one dollar a day.Almost 2. 7 billion people (thats 40% of our population) survive on less than two dollars per day. In such circumstances, daily necessities like food and water take give-up the ghost priority. Clothing, which can be reworn, therefore is reworn. Day after day. After day At World Clothes Line, they make clothes their number one priority. 2. 3 No One Without N. O. W One At A Time No One Without water is their non-stop mission. Every product in a purchase provides clean water to one person for 25 years through a concrete Bio-sand filtration system and their partnership with Thirst Relief Inter field of study.Studies have proven that these filters effectively remove more than 90% of bacteria and 100% of the parasites nominate in untreated water. Nearly one billion people lack access to clean water and each year 2. 5 million people die from contaminated water, 90% are under 5 years old. The World Health Organization has declared a worldwide water crisis among the worlds poorest people. Society has conditioned us to be overwhelmed with statistics and the quantity of need in the world. The easy thought process is to say theres too much and Im only one person.By taking one step at a time, one day at a time, one person at a time, theyre breaking big bucks numbers and they believe in the power of one. 9 No One Without has aligned themselves with the Thirst Relief mission To overcome death and disease resulting from the phthisis of contaminated water by providing safe, clean water to those in need around the world. 2. 3. 1 Why Water? Thirst Relief International before long has Bio-sand filter placements in Brazil, Cameroon, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. No One Without will follow Thirst Relief International around the globe on the quest for clean water. 10 2. 4 TOMS In 2006, American traveller Blake Mycoskie befriended children in a village in Argentina and found they had no piazza to protect their feet.Wanting to help, he created TOMS, a company that would match every pair of property purchased with a pair of new apparel given to a child in need. One for One. Realizing this movement could serve other basic needs, TOMS Eyewear was launched. With every pair purchased, TOMS will help give sight to a person in need. One for One. Over the past seven years, theyve listened and learned with every pair of new shoes given. With the support of their amazing mesh of Giving Partners and the continued support of their community, theyve reached this major milestone and proven that business can fuel good and sustain giving. They have seen remarkable results with shoe giving. lieu are helping improve school attendance and enrolment. Theyre combined with screenings to combat malnutrition. Theyre given in conjunction with medication to fight hookworm. Further, their model is one that can work beyond shoes. Since they launched TOMS Eyewear, theyve helped restore sight to more than 150,000 individuals around the world. And they look forward to finding new ways to help others. They currently make Giving Pairs in Ethiopia, Kenya, Argentina and China.Within two years, they will produce one third of their Giving Shoes in the regions where they give them. By producing more shoes locally they will create and support jobs in places where they are needed. They ar e testing production in India and are looking to put out manufacturing in Africa and other regions. In Haiti, they are in the early stages of getting production off the ground. Theyve also partnered with local artists to create a line of hand-painted shoes for their customers helping create and support jobs in a place where they also give. And theyre looking to offer more styles that feature locally produced textiles.Their sight giving empowers communities and supports sustainable eye-care organizations in the developing world. They work with locally based organizations that train residents to provide professional care. So its an investment in clinics, people and even local jobs. 11 2. 5 Common Threadz Common Threadz is a non-profit organization helping orphans & vulnerable children in developing nations to reach their full potential through the empowerment of the children, their caretakers & the local grass roots community organizations that support them. 2. 5.1 School Uniforms f or Orphans & Vulnerable Children This was the first initiative that Common Threadz created in 2008. For every t-shirt or bracelet that they sell from their Shop to Help Store, they give a school uniform to an orphan or vulnerable child (OVC) so they can go to, or stay in school. Some of the children they care for had been refused schooling for not being able to afford a uniform. Uniforms are a unavoidableness in most schools in Africa and they want to make sure that all these children have the chance to go to school, make friends and learn so that they can reach their full potential.Since the inception of this program, hundreds of uniforms have been handed over to OVCs. Typically a uniform will last a year and so there is an on-going need for uniforms. As the caregivers they continuously work to identify the OVCs in need and as support for this program give rises, they plan to hand over many more uniforms in the future. 2. 5. 2 Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Mentor Program They currently operate a mentor program in Obanjeni, South Africa. This program teams responsible and employed adults from the local community with orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) as role models on a one-to-one basis. Each of their mentors supports many children, meeting with each child for at least one hour per week. The mentors spend time helping with homework, chatting about personal hygiene, advising on healthy lifestyles and most of all, listening to the child. In some cases these mentors have come back to them to report abuse and a child has had to be moved to a place of safety and the police and social workers are called in. The mentors are their ears and eyes in the community. The program has rolled out with many young children and teenagers benefiting greatly.Still in its infancy, this program has been a great success and will be replicated and expanded moving forward. 2. 5. 3 The Feeding Program Common Threadz provides the reinforcement and nutritional guidance for grassroots non-profit organizations in rural South Africa, such as Siyathuthuka Obanjeni, to provide daily meals to over 200 orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) that they have identified in the area. Proper nutrition is a fundamental need for the children to grow and learn and although the government says that its a childs right not to go hungry, this is far from the reality for many thousands of children in South Africa. This program has grown from its inception last year when caregivers began to cook three meals a week for children after school. Now an employed cook prepares a cooked meal every day for the children to eat after school and in April 2010 they started to provide high protein porridge for the children to eat on their way to school, as the teachers have indicated that it is very difficult for the children to slim down when they are hungry. 12 Once again this program has much room to expand and reach many more needy OVCs but it would not be possible without the suppo rt of their customers. 2. 5.4 Shoes for Kids This program complements the School Uniforms Programme by providing new school shoes to barefoot children in need, to wit orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs). School uniforms might give these children entrance to school, however many of them walk for up to four hours a day to go to school barefoot. A new pair of school shoes is usually the only new pair of shoes most of these children will ever receive and for most of them it will be the only pair of shoes they will own. All it takes is $10 to provide an OVC with a new pair of shoes so that they can go to school with confidence.2. 6 Threads for Thought What began as a small business manufacturing and marketing graphic tee shirts that were made exclusively from organic cotton fiber, gave back to charity, and promoted a cleaner environment, or advocated for peace, has grown into a complete lifestyle brand. They have never deviated from their primary mission, to promote a sense of resp onsibility for those who share this world with us, but instead than simply broadcasting that message on the front of tee shirts, the company has incorporated those principles into their very existence. 2. 6. 1 How their threads are sustainableThreads 4 Thought fabrics are made using the most sustainable materials possible such as organically grown cotton and polyester derived from recycled water bottles. Their fabrics are dyed using low impact dyes whenever possible & often the water used in the dye process is purified and then reused rather than being discarded. 13 2. 6. 2 Organic Cotton vs. Conventional Cotton ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Organic cotton is 90% less virulent than conventional cotton. Conventional cotton crops use more than 25% of all the insecticides in the world and 12% of all the pesticides while growing on only 2.5 % of cultivated lands in the world. Organic cotton uses untreated seeds that are never genetically modified while conventional cotton uses genetically modified se eds, hurting the crops & soil over time. Organic Cotton plants stay strong through crop rotation and retain water efficiently due to increased organic matter in the soil. Conventional cotton plants use synthetic fertilizers. Organic Cotton fields use seasonal freezes and water management for defoliation. Conventional cotton does this through the use of toxic chemicals. Weeds are physically removed by hand hoeing and cultivation.Farmers use beneficial insects and trap crops to control pests. Conventional cotton uses a toxic aerial spraying technique. 2. 6. 3 Turning Plastic into fashion 1. The plastics are sorted according to colour and SNV plastics. 2. Next, the plastic goes through a sterilization process. Then, it is alter and crushed into chips. Next, liquefaction occurs under high temperatures, as a mixture of the recycled chips and some new plastic from petroleum derivatives are melted together to form a smooth, syrup-like material. 3. The first threads are formed when the liq uefied material is forced through holes and exposed to air.The hardened threads, called tow, then go through a strengthen process. 4. The drawing process strengthens the molecular bonds of the tow the tow is pulled to double their size and then shrunken. 5. The threads then go through a dryer where they develop a woolly texture. The texture is inspected for strength and thickness, and then spun into a finer yarn that is then ready to be dyed and knit into fabric. 14 2. 7 147 Million Orphans Profits from 147 Million Orphans are directed to the 147 Million Orphans Foundation, where they are given to hunch+ 1 Projects and feeding programs. The 147 Million Orphans Foundation was created to impact the lives of children through the provision of food, water, and medicine. They invest directly in projects that help provide these basic needs to those who desperately need it, and most of their projects occur in Haiti, Honduras, and Uganda. As with any good al-Qaida you must lay one brick at a time. Whether that is a medical clinic in Haiti, homes in Honduras, Water Wells in Sudan, or a store house full of food for Uganda, they want to show the love of Christ. The rebuilding of the wall in Nehemiah was accomplished by people just doing their part and helping others to do theirs. The Love+ 1 projects are steps in rebuilding, and they would love for us to be a part of the rebuilding. 2. 7. 1 During 2012 and 2013, the Love+ 1 Projects Included ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? It is rooted in the Somali diaspora communities leadership, and it makes room for the solidarity and creativity of motivated people everywhere. Together, theyre providing relief in Somalia, and shining a light on a culture of poets, artists, mothers and fathers, children, innovators, farmers, businesspeople. Each one, a star in his or her own right. Perched on the very tip of the Horn of Africa, Somalia has suffered two decades of hardship, violence and displacement. Its estimated that 25% of the countrys population have fled their homes, traveling to Kenya and Ethiopia or to other parts of Somalia. Since the summer of 2011, the country has faced a crippling food crisis. Between 50,000 to 100,000 Somalis have died as a result. US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton called it the most severe humanitarian emergency in the world today-and the worst East Africa has seen in decades. Thanks to the spirit and efforts of the worldwide Somali Diaspora and other compassionate individuals, organizations and governments, relief is getting to people who need it. Donors have looked past the negative imagery of Somalia in the media and sent their support. That support has saved the lives of mothers and fathers, children, poets, artists, innovators, farmers, businesspeople, human beings. But there is still so much that needs to be done in Somalia. The famine has ended, but 1 in 5 Somali children are still malnourished. 2. 5 million people are still dependent on food aid in order to survive. It will take an investment of time and great effort to shake off the legacy of 20 years of war and zymolysis in Somalia. The Long Road to Recovery

The great r forthe to Recoery, From a Hopeless give tongue to of Mind and Body Michael A W summatee ENG 211 Professor Geoff pope March 14, 2010 The Long street to Recovery 2 The Long Road to Recovery, From a Hopeless State of Mind and Body Alcoholism and the affection of addiction develop been viewed in two strong yet entirely different blockades of the spectrum for as eagle-eyed as men and women keep back been losing simpleness of how much and when they drink. peerless end of the spectrum is the immoralist bear witness of view, which claims the lush as not having morals (Gary, 1999).When describing alcoholics, they have also been go to bedn to c entirely them sinful or moral weaklings (Gary, 1999). Throughout history, the alcoholic has been ridiculed, as described by Gary Stofle in the article The Morality of Alcoholism Society has ascribed to these views as evidenced by the fact that alcoholics have been jailed except for being alcoholics in the past. At worst, alco holics have been killed or left to die beca drop of societys views and from a lack of knowledge concerning intercession of potomania as well. At best, alcoholics have been laughed at, scorned, pitied and/or run out of town (1999).These views of the alcoholic have caused a great many to relapse, and even die, when every(prenominal)(a) that was needed was a little intelligence of the disease. The biggest problem with holding this view of addiction is that it can be potentially fatal for the alcoholic of The Long Road to Recovery 3 my caliber. The other end of the spectrum that I hold to be truer, yet still outweart agree completely with, is the view of the Amoralist. The alcoholic must also understand that he is not responsible for the amours he said or did when he was drinking. The physical addiction controlled his behavior, and because he is powerless over the addiction, he cannot be held responsible for it (Gary, 1999). My intent in this essay is give my first-hand experience of the offend and despair that the disease of drinking can cause, and how if you are imparting to do whatever it takes to end the pain and the suffering, any maven can be adoptd from the same hopeless state of brain and body as I was. My name is Mike and I am an alcoholic. I am responsible for the things that I have hold oute while being loaded. What makes me an alcoholic is that when I drink, I dont know how much I will drink, or what I will end up doing while I am loaded what I mean by that is when I aim alcohol or any other drug, I release my addiction all over again, and I am at the mercy of it. I bear my power of choice, between doing the right things and the wrong things. When I am loaded, there are only three places that I can end up jails, institutions, and death. The Long Road to Recovery 4 There are three main stages regarding the disease of addictioncolon the early stage, the middle stage, and the end stage.C. H. Angel writes, During the early stage of alcoholism an individual becomes more dependent upon alcohol. If a per word of honor has a stressful mean solar day, alcohol will be consumed to alter his or her mood. Alcohol is used to relieve stress on a regular basis (2007). I remember this stage clearly, this is when I was just trying to fit in and be one of the cool kids when I still had the power to control whether or not I got drunk. (Keep in mind that when you cross from stage to stage, there is an imaginary business concern that you cross. You dont know when you are about to approach it, or even when you have crossed it, but it comes and then it goes. ) The middle stage is the point where a person desires alcohol more intensely. A person starts drinking more alcohol at one sitting. The person clearly starts losing control over his or her drinking (Angel, 2007). When I got to this point in my demeanor, my thoughts and follow throughs were controlled by alcohol and drugs just about all my actions were consumed with the thoughts of u sing. What I mean by that is everything I did I always had thoughts of when and where was I going to get my next fix.The Long Road to Recovery 5 Angel describes the end stage as the individual is haunt with drinking. The individual drinks to the exclusion of all other people and all other aspects of his or her life. The individuals problems with alcohol are apparent to everyone near that person. The mental, emotional and physical wellness of the individual erodes rapidly in the end stage. Serious problems are present all around physical health, mental health, financial, inter-personal relationships, financial and legal (2007). When I hit this stage, my life, and my familys life got turned upside down.I couldnt hold down a job, nor did I want to, I had been to jail countless times, my family wanted postcode to do with me, and my children, didnt even know who I really was. I myself didnt even know who I really was. But for the thanksgiving of a loving god, and a magic place of Alco holics Anonymous, I was fitted to gain control over my addiction, and I was relieved from a hopeless state of mind and body. What my life was like I am not exactly sure as to why I became an alcoholic, and I might not ever know why I was afflicted with a disease that there is no known cure. But the fact remains I am, and I will always be one, and I am ok with it. I had a mother who The Long Road to Recovery 6 loved me dearly, and a step tiro who, as long as I could remember, always made me fight for his approval, attention, and even his love. I am not saying that he didnt love me or anything of the sorts. But I always felt like I was in a competition with my sister (who is biologically his) to get a piece of him all to myself. I grew up never meeting my biological father, and still to this day I have never met him, and now it is too late, because he has been dead for a couple of years now.My mother isnt an alcoholic, but my biological father did lose his battle with his disease of addiction in 2004, so the only thing that I could safely assume is that I got the gene from him, but since he is gone I will never know for sure. For the most I had a good childhood, nothing to traumatic ever really happened to me, I lived a sheltered, uneventful life. I lived in my childhood home with my parents up till the day that I graduated from high school in 1997. I was always surrounded by people who loved, and cared for me. So I dont completely understand where I went wrong. When I hit my bottom, I had been battling my addiction for many years. I had been in jail over and over again. For those suffering from the disease of alcoholism it seems to be an almost universal truth that before things can get The Long Road to Recovery 7 better, they have to get worse sometimes a lot worse (Buddy, 2009). That was completely true for me every incident by itself was never enough to stop doing what I was doing. Buddy writes, Alcoholism is a progressive disease there comes a point at whi ch even the most dedicated drunk decides that there just might be a problem.Alcoholism does not stay in one place. It doesnt hit a certain stage and then level off. It keeps deepening, affecting him physically, mentally, morally and spiritually. On all of those levels he keeps getting worse until finally he hits bottom (2009). Then after years of abuse, to me and my family, it all came to a head. On October 2, 2002, my house got raided for the manufacturing of methamphetaminescomma and that was the end of life as I knew it. As a result of the house getting raided, my kids got interpreted away from me, and placed with my parents, because I had failed them miserably as a father. misrepresent lives of blameless children is what my sponsor used to tell me and, boy, was he right about that. My daughter was a year old and my son was two months old when they were taken away from me, because I was a danger to them. It is only by the grace of a loving god that nothing had happened to them t hat I couldnt refurbish. The Long Road to Recovery 8 As a result of mine and my ex-wifes addiction, my son is autistic. He is high functioning, yet he is still autistic, so the wretched decisions that I had made, will affect him for his whole life.I spent 110 days in county jail, till I was released from jail on February 26, 2003. Even after I was released from jail, I still continued to drink and use drugs, until I quit trying to mask the pain that I felt, and tried to do something about the pain I had caused. So on March 20, 2003, I quit trying to control my life, cause my best decisions got me into the situation that I was in, from that day to this one, I have not taken a drug or a drink to hide any longer. What life is like nowWhen I quit trying to control my life, and let someone else take control, my life got better, I am not saying that it got better overnight, but it got better. On June 6, 2003, I was checked into impatient treatment at a place called American Behavioral H ealth Systems, in Spokane Washington. That is when I started to get control of my demons that I had been struggling with for such a long time. That is where I had learned about myself, and my disease of addiction. I spent 3 months there working on the things that brought my life crashing down around me. The Long Road to Recovery 9While I was in treatment, I took responsibility for my actions, and the damaged that I caused. I quit trying to blame my circumstance on the people around me, and I came to the realization that all of the things that went on in my life, had one common denominator, and that was me. Once I found out what made me tick, what I wanted out of life, and how drugs and alcohol played a detrimental role in ever attaining any of those things. I learned what I needed to do to get all of the things that I wanted out of life and most importantly how I could do it without drugs and alcohol.Too much personal testimony for this research-related paper. While in treatment, I started to repair some of the damages that I had put my children and my family through. In most cases, it took time to heal the wounds. As for my children, I had supervised visits with them, while they still lived with my parents. Once I had completed impatient treatment, and moved to Yakima, I had visits with them once a week till, on February 2004, after 18 months of living with my parents, they came to live with me again. The only reason that they were able to do that was because I was no longer a anger to them. The day they came back to me was the greatest day ever. I have to admit, that I was really panicky about the whole deal, because I wasnt sure how to be a father, a sober The Long Road to Recovery 10 father. Then I came to the realization, that when I was loaded I wasnt a father anyways. Today, I repair the damage that I have caused by not creating anymore pain. I am the best father that I can be to my children today, and as long as I dont get loaded today, they will neve r have seen me or remember seeing me loaded. As for going to jail, I havent been back since the last time that I got out in 2003. I took me to get clean, to realize that the only time that I had ever gone to jail was because of drugs and alcohol. So for today, I am a single father of three beautiful children, who love me with all of their hearts, no matter what I have done in the past. They know what I have done, because I dont lie or hide who I was from them. They know that I have made mistakes, and they have forgiven me, and they love and accept me for who I am, and not who I was.If you think that you might know someone, who is suffering from the disease of addiction, as outlined in the DSM-lV (Burge & Schneider, 1999) The Long Road to Recovery 11 1. Recurrent alcohol use resulting in a failure to fulfill major role obligations at work, school or home (e. g. , repeated absences or poor work capital punishment related to alcohol use alcohol-related absences, suspensions or expulsio ns from school neglect of children household) 2. Recurrent alcohol use in situations in which it is physically hazardous 3. (e. g. driving an cable car or operating a machine when impaired by alcohol use) 4. Recurrent alcohol-related legal problems (e. g. , arrests for alcohol-related disorderly conduct) 5. Continued alcohol use despite having unrelenting or recurrent social or interpersonal problems caused or exacerbated by the effects of the alcohol (e. g. , arguments with spouse about consequences of intoxication, physical fights) If you see any of these signs, dont be afraid that you are going to hurt their feelings, because it is not about sparing their feelings, it about saving their life. The Long Road to Recovery 12 The most important thing before an alcoholic can be approached is that they show signs of a readiness to modify. If the signs are not there, any attempts to make them change will fail. The readiness to change doesnt just happen, it takes time, and the time that I talk about is presented in steps. Precontemplation (not ready for change), contemplation (ambivalence about change), preparation (planning for change), action (the act of change) and maintenance (maintaining the new behavior) (Burge, Schneider, 1999).Not everybody stays off of drugs and alcohol on their first try. Relapse is common in the recovery process. This usually occurs when the alcoholic doesnt feel as if he or she had a problem. But if they are truly an alcoholic, they will eventually realize that they are, and they will ask for help. There are many places that a person can get help to solve the problems of addictions. You can go to impatient treatment, outpatient treatment, or just go straight to the entourage of alcoholics anonymous. Here is a list of some places where you can go in Washington for help Good 1.American Behavioral Health Systems, residential treatment serve are The Long Road to Recovery 13 located in the Spokane Valley at 12715 E. If it wasnt for the grace of a loving god, and the magical place of Alcoholics Anonymous, I would be able to be a father to my three wonderful children, be a son to my mother, or be a productive member of todays society. By comparison, economic recessions are part and parcel of the business cycle, which we are able to take in our stride and counter with a variety of measures. During the year, the world remained tortuous in the European sovereign debt crisis and American economic weakness. Although these conditions affected our arrivals primarily from Europe, we were able to c apitalise on the flourishing Chinese market. At our four resorts in the Maldives, for example, the number of Chinese guests surpassed those from Europe. In our continuing efforts to rebalance the Groups assets, we made the bar make believe purchase of Banyan Tree Seychelles which gave rise to a net gain. We also sold and leased back Angsana Velavaru in January 2013. The hybrid structure of this deal is a first for Banyan Tree, and we are pleased with how it allows us to rebalance our portfolio while still participating in the profits from the operations of Angsana Velavaru.2012 with overall revenue growing 3% to S$338.4 million. Due to improved results from our hotel investments and fee-based businesses, as well as a higher contribution from completed sales of property units. Group EBITDA was S$74.5 million, up 51% on the back of higher revenue and a gain on thebargain purchase of Banyan Tree Seychelles. This in turn resulted in PATMI increasing by 856% (S$14.9 million), tempered by higher finance be and income tax expenses.HOTEL INVESTMENTSOur hotel investments delivered a untroubleder performance in 2012, with Group- possess hotels posting total revenue of S$187.7 million, up 15% from the previous year. This was due to the higher contribution from our Thai properties and the consolidation of revenue from Banyan Tree Seychelles from 2Q12 onwards. These gains were partially offset by lower revenue from our Maldives properties as Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru and Angsana Ihuru were temporarily closed for refurbishment. As a result of the increase in revenue, EBITDA for this segment grew by a healthy 69% to S$36.6 million.PROPERTY SALESRevenue from property sales was S$42.7 million. The 36% decrease was due to the sale of development sites in Lijiang, Yangshuo and Huangshan to our china Fund in 2011. Excluding those transactions, revenue and EBITDA from property sales saw maturement of 43% and 74% respectively, thanks to a higher contribution from completed sales o f property units.FEE-BASEDTotal revenue from our fee-based businesses registered growth of 9% to reach S$108.0 million. This was attributable to an increase in fees from hotel management and architectural and interior design and other services. Accordingly, EBITDA for our fee-based businesses grew by 23%.2013 appears to be another challenging year for the global economy. We anticipate continued weakness in our European target markets. In Asia, which has been the worlds economic engine these past four years, growth is in all likelihood to moderate. Despite the cooling of Chinas economy, the tourism market both inbound and outbound is expected to continue to grow. The Chinese government is aggressively promoting domestic tourism as part of its outline to increase domestic consumption, thereby cushioning the slowdown in export manufacturing. Banyan Trees strong branding and rapidly expanding footprintin China will position us to take advantage of this trend. Our seven regional mark eting offices in China will be invaluable in enabling us to tap the vast potential of this market and to enhance awareness of our hotels with key accounts in China. Our strategy going forward will include continuing with our asset rebalancing to unlock value and deploy capital to more promising markets. At the same time, we are exploring the possibility of extending the successful Fund model into other areas. In terms of growing particular segments, we will be focusing on increasing income from our fee-based and property sales businesses. We have built the fee-based segment to a point where it now has an impetus of its own. On the property sales front, we plan to move into selling more primary and serviced residences.Primary residences under the Banyan Tree brand,We will also be going forward with the establishment of a third brand of residences to be wholly sold and managed by us. Rather than compete with local property developers, we will leverage our branding and design skills to market to a niche consultation in China.
